Just follow the ruins of the Roman wall to get to this little hotel. The impressive view of the wall is one of the hotel's strong points, along with the friendly service. This hotel takes its name from the mountain it stands onâ€"Putxet. It's close to both Carrer Balmes and Ronda General Mitre, two of the principal routes into the city. Hostal Santcarlo
This small inn is on the third floor of a building that was refurbished as part of the pre-Olympic Games renovation project in 1990. Includes central heating and showers with hot water. The rooms that look onto Plaça Urquinaona are rather noisy so it is better to request a bedroom overlooking the inner patio, where it is a lot quieter. While a good bargain, service is often dubious and reservations are haphazard. If you're willing to run the risk of sleeping on the Placa Urquinaona, then you'll be quite happy here.

Restored and renovated in 1992 for the Olympic Games, this is another example of late 19th century Modernist architecture. The much needed refurbishment means that the building has lost some of its old-world charm but has improved the quality of the bedrooms. Opulently luxurious, this hotel is Barcelona's crème de la crème. One of its greatest attractions is the view of the entire city from the top floors. Hostal La Terrassa
This is one of the friendliest and most pleasant of the city's inexpensive inns. You'll find it in the Raval district just off the Ramblas. The area is a bit noisy but full of life, character, colour and atmosphere. Only half of the bedrooms have baths and a limited number have a view of the street or the pretty Modernist inner patio, where breakfast is served in summer. Nevertheless, the bedrooms are kept spotlessly clean and provide a comfortable and economical place to stay.

This brand new hotel is in a newly developed area of the city called Diagonal Mar on the seafront. It's just 1 kilometre away from Port OlÃmpic and the area is due for residential and commercial development in the near future. All the bedrooms are doubles, and have windows facing seawards.
