Hotel Euler Basel

  • Very Expensive/Deluxe

Reverence for the past and tradition exists in this hotel's overall design and antique furnishings. Apart from a few modern comforts, the decor is modeled after the belle époque. Past guests include Greta Garbo, Josephine Baker and Luciano Pavarotti. With its Mediterranean style terrace and its top-quality cuisine, the management of hotel restaurant Le Jardin Euler are no novices in their field. The Euler bar is a classic, born of the turn of the last century and oozing Chesterfield appeal.

Jugendherberge

  • Inexpensive

Basel's youth hostel is located in one of the quietest and most beautiful parts of the city, close to the Rhein and Museum fĂĽr Gegenwartskunst. The red building, which was built in 1851 as and extension to a silk ribbon factory, reminds you more of a schoolhouse than a loft. The idyll can mainly be found outside. In the rooms they have green metal beds with thin mattresses, but if you need a cheap place to stay, it's ideal. Reception is only open 7a-10a and 2p-midnight. After that you need the pin code. Closed from 22nd December-3rd January.

Mercure Hotel Europe Basel

  • Expensive

Guests of the Hotel Europe will find everything they need under one roof - charming staff, beautiful rooms and two excellent restaurants. Peter Moser's "Les Quatre Saison" is certainly one of the best restaurants in Switzerland. The hotel has an impressive large lobby, where you can sit and digest the financial news. The rooms are large, and their assymetric nature gives them a special air. Earthy colours seem to rule, although the bright bathrooms seem to exude a definite vitality.

Choice wines are also a speciality. Any description of the Ă-koladen is incomplete without mentioning the cosmetics, stationery, natural colours and polishes and craftwork that are also sold here. Everything is produced organically and the shop practises fair trade and celebrates a certain way of life. It is situated near the Basler Stadttheater. SwissĂ'tel Basel

  • Very Expensive/Deluxe

The dynamic SwissĂ'tel was built in 1984. Despite the modern structure inside, the outside remains as fresh and impressive as it was on its initial opening. The roomy lobby harks back to the turn of last century in its use of space, and the piano, combined with palm like greenery, only serves to reinforce this image. The hotel's 238 rooms offer a similarly spacious feel and with their many corners appear a little playful in their design. Many other hotels fit rooms with any old desk; at the SwissĂ'tel they are grand and elegant. Curvy lamps, tasteful sofas and enormous televisions combine to create a perfectly harmonised environment.

Hotel Victoria Basel

  • Expensive

The discreetly-toned lobby greets guests with a stylish design. Its restaurant Le Train Bleu's philosophy is French 'joie de vivre', and is much acclaimed by local food critics. A terrace offers a pleasant view of the Bahnhofsplatz. The rooms adopt a 19th century focus in a playful manner without appearing stuffy. And the furniture, set in light and airy surroundings, is elegant and sober with the odd cheeky, modern touch here and there that works well with the overall Victorian feel.

Hotel Brasserie au violon

  • Inexpensive

Once a home for wayward and troubled youths, this charming hotel is also an excellent French brasserie. The rooms, former cells, aren't terribly large or sunlit, but the converted warden's offices have it a little better being bigger with a magnificent view of the Old Town. All the rooms have been designed with warm, earthy tones and this combined with the sleek simple lines nicely complements the very elegant 'Shaker' furniture.

Basilisk

  • Moderate

A central element to Hotel Basilisk is its in-house restaurant, with a lazy garden terrace, beautiful trees and little fishpond. This mid-range hotel places a great deal of emphasis on simplicity and straightforwardness; its generously sized guest rooms are light and airy and whilst the decor is by no means the product of the latest fads, the rooms display dignified, comfortable middle-class style. The so-called, Orkus-Kunstkeller (Orkus 'art-cellar') is very inviting, can be hired for functions and with bare stone walls, high wooden stools and long wooden tables has a certain knightly charm to it.

Teufelhof Basel (The)

  • Moderate

The 'Arthotel Devil Court' is by far the most "limited addition" accommodation in town. The concept is as followsâ€"cabaret, gourmet cuisine, cafĂ© & bar and wine shop all rolled in one. All nine rooms have been individually created by artists and are redesigned every few years; the present decor is dedicated to the concept of time. In one room, the ceiling is hung with empty newspaper holders! The whole complex of buildings forms one complete showcase for artists' work.

Steinengraben

  • Inexpensive

It's very difficult to find cheap accommodation in Basel. The Hotel Steinengraben is one of the cheapest options. The 1950's don't quite seem to have to come to an end here, a feeling strengthened the oil paintings in the entrance. It's obvious that the rooms used to be apartments - the comfy sofas in the double rooms give a distinct 'living room' feel, while the single rooms are somewhat more sober. The unusual murals provide a reminder of Art Nouveau both in colour and form. If you want a simple, but clean place to stay, this is ideal.

Central

If you want to stay at the Hotel Central, you have to book in at the Hotel Euler, as they are part of the same group and are very close to one another. The peaceful Hotel Central is the sophisticated Euler's "little brother". If service is one of you priorities, it's probably best to stay at the main hotel. The Central is targeted at a younger type of guest. All of the rooms have parquet flooring, so carpet-lovers may find staying here a little difficult! The basic furnishings definitely make a fresh impression - everything seems to be made of wood! There is no lift.
