Savoy Berlin
"Friendly and cosy" was the great writer Thomas Mann's verdict on this little hotel behind the Theater des Westens. Built in 1929, the Savoy survived wartime air-raids and was used as the British Army's headquarters in Berlin after 1945. Reopened as a hotel in the 1950's, the Savoy is an elegant establishment that places great emphasis on tradition. The Times Bar is legendary and guests can admire the city from the wonderful rooftop terrace. The Savoy is located near Kurfürstendamm on Fasanenstraße, home to Berlin's haute couture.

Best Western Kanthotel
Due to its proximity to the International Conference Centre, there are a lot of hotels at the upper end of Kantstraße. One of these is the Kanthotel, part of the Best Western Hotel chain. This is a new building with comfortable, modern rooms and sound-proof windows which cut out noise from the busy street below. The centre of western Berlin is just a couple of bus stops away. Around the corner is Wilmersdorfer Straße, a pedestrian precinct which is still good for shopping, although it has seen better days.

Maritim proArte Hotel Berlin
This place is no bargain, but then if you want to stay in the middle of the city, you are going to have to pay a bit over the odds anyway. Originally built during the communist East German era, the Maritim was completely renovated in the 1990'S and now boasts the highest standards. The interior is modern and stylish; the foyer, bar and restaurant are decorated with modern art and designer furniture. Sunflower Hostel
Located just a few minutes from Warschauer station in the Friedrichshain neighborhood, the Sunflower Hostel is easily accessible and centrally located in east Berlin. A four-story building, the hostel sits at the end of Helsingforser Strasse just north of the river Spree and boasts far more than the usual hostel accommodation. The Sunflower offers mixed dorms (5-6 or 7-8 people), quads, triples, doubles, singles, and weekly apartments for up to six people year-round. A user-friendly operation, the hostel provides laundry, cooking, and internet facilities, a 24 hour bar, plentiful reference materials, and a 3 euro All-You-Can-Eat breakfast served from 8a-12p. The staff are international and helpful, the rooms clean and unique, and the total experience far from the typical "cheap bed for a night" scenario that gives a fair share of hostels a bad name. â€" Brent Katte

Hollywood Media Hotel Berlin
Theme hotels are currently all the rage in Berlin and the Hollywood Media Hotel, owned by producer Artur Brauner, is just one of the many establishments to have jumped on the bandwagon. The hotel offers individually decorated rooms depicting particular movies, eras or actors. All rooms are equipped with multimedia facilities including satellite and pay TV, fax and internet connections and ISDN telephone lines. And if you can drag yourself away from your TV screen or the hotel bar (appropriately called 'Casablanca'), you'll find yourself bang smack in the centre of western Berlin.

Hotel Riehmers Hofgarten
Wilhelm Riehmer despised the squalid buildings and gloomy courtyards, which were the norm in late-19th century Berlin. And it was in the name of progress that he built 20 town houses with lovely, sunny gardens along Yorckstraße. The entire complex survived wartime bombing raids and was thoroughly renovated in the early 80s. It exudes the exquisite charm of yesteryear, with antique lampposts and long stretches of lawn enclosed by low iron fences. Guests of Riehmers Hofgarten Hotel will delight in this ambience. Also highly recommended is the wonderful restaurant located in the same complex, E.T.A. Hoffmann.

Estrel Hotel & Convention Center
This is, without doubt, a place of superlatives. Built on the banks of Neukölln Schifffahrts Canal in the mid-1990's, the Estrel resembles a huge ocean liner from the outside and a small town on the inside. Several restaurants and bars are grouped around a bright, tree-lined piazza crowned by an enormous glass roof and dominated by a sumptuous fountain. The 1,000 plus rooms vary in standard from very good to the height of luxury. The upper floors boast stunning views over the city, which more than makes up for the slightly squalid industrial neighbourhood in which the hotel is situated. Down at the canal there is a landing place for tourist boats.

Hotel Rheinsberg am See
Named after the idyllic town of Rheinsberg in northern Brandenburg, the hotel is actually situated in the Märkisches Viertel in the sleepy Berlin district of Reinickendorf. The area is typically suburban and not known for its sights or its nightlife. The "Rheinsberg", however, is beautifully situated on the shores of a lake. All rooms are well-furnished in a somewhat rustic style. The hotel's biggest asset is the fantastic fitness centre with swimming pool, sauna and solarium, available free to guests.

The perfect location for trade fair visitors. Situated on busy Kaiserdamm, the main trade fair halls are just a few minutes walk away. Built at the turn of the century (the elevator installed in 1910 still works!), Hotel Brandies has quiet and comfortable rooms facing onto the back garden. The garden is also a pleasant place for breakfast in the summertime. As the hotel fills up during major trade fairs and conferences (the prices go up too), it is recommended to book well in advance.

Tulip Inn Berlin-Friedrichshain
Before the fall of the Berlin Wall, many Berliners thought of Friedrichshain as a grey, faceless quarter full of shabby old tenements and ugly postwar constructions. Nowadays Friedrichshain is the heart of Berlin's "alternative" café and club scene. Less commercial than better-known Prenzlauer Berg, the area around Simon-Dach-Straße is brimming with in bars and cool cafés. "Go east - go Friedrichshain!" seems to be the slogan of the day. The Tulip Inn is close to all the action and has comfortable rooms with a definite Parisian flair - fine wooden furniture, brass lamps and tasteful wallpaper. A good alternative for night-owls and party-goers wanting to escape the tourist groups which have taken over the nearby Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg districts.

This medium-sized, modern hotel in Spandau offers every conceivable comfort as well as something that is rare in a big city - peace and quiet. Quality Hotel & Suites Berlin City-East
The hotel is situated in Lichtenberg, a typical East German suburb full of depressing grey tower blocks. The Wilhelmsberg is one of these high-rise monstrosities, which all look remarkably similar to each other. All 400 rooms and suites were thoroughly modernized in the 1990s. The rooms are comfortable and spacious and the surrounding area has good shopping facilities. The quickest way to get to the city centre is by car, as the nearest S-Bahn station is on the "circle line", which doesn't go directly into the inner city.

Hotel Helle Mitte im Atrium
Before the fall of the Wall, most Berliners wouldn't have spared a thought for the district of Hellersdorf, deep in Eastern Berlin. However, the opening of the district's new shopping centre "Helle Mitte" has put Hellersdorf firmly on the map. A well-known college also recently relocated here from West Berlin, bringing the area even more into the public consciousness. Hotel Helle Mitte is a modern and friendly establishment in the mid-price range and has been in business since 1997. The area offers good shopping and a modern cinema complex. Hotel mitART
Friedrichstraße has several different faces: at the Kreuzberg end, the street is lined with council flats; the area around Checkpoint Charlie is clustered with expensive boutiques and exclusive department stores (e.g. Galeries Lafayette)â€"but the northern end is the most exciting. Countless bars, theatres and art galleries enrich the area's reputation as Berlin's cultural highlight. Here, on the second floor of a pretty turn-of-the-century building, is the small "artists' hostel" mitArt. Its nine modernised rooms are embellished with selected works of modern art. Dreamy, simply dreamy. In the mid-nineties, the composer, photographer and publisher Lars Stroschen transformed a number of 'normal' Berlin flats into an innovative art hotel. Ranging from the world's smallest hotel room (decorated with garden gnomes) to a modern-day Cinderella's castle, each room is unique. One room is completely decorated in orange, another is full of black symbols and mysterious pictograms. The hotel has been so successful that another hotel is to be opened soon.

Hotel St.-Michaels-Heim
St.Michaels Heim is situated in the leafy and well-to-do Grunewald district. The stylish villa is surrounded by parkland and has pleasant views over the nearby lake. Run by a charitable institution, the building is divided into different sections - a hotel, youth hostel, kindergarten and conference rooms (mostly used for church meetings). The Western city centre is not that far away, although the area isn't linked to the underground system, which makes things slightly difficult if you are here without a car. However, lovely Grunewald forest and its many lakes are extremely close.

It's good to know that places like this still exist! Both the interior and the exterior of the Hotel Agon are very seventies. But who cares? As its name suggests, this branch of the Dorint hotel chain offers comfortable accommodation at moderate rates. Most rooms face the courtyard and display a distinctive Californian touch with palm trees, pastel colours and flowery paintings. The reception area and dining hall have lovely wooden floors and stucco decorations on the ceilings. The prices seem to increase according to the temperature, reaching a peak in the summer. Sofitel Berlin Schweizerhof
In 1997 the legendary Schweizerhof Hotel on Budapester Straße was demolished and this modern, luxury hotel was built in its place. Offering every possible convenience and built to the highest technical standards, the new Schweizerhof is western Berlin's answer to rival establishments like the Adlon in the east of the city. "Luxury is a matter of principle" is the hotel's self-assured motto. There is not much left to add to that, apart from mentioning the first-class swimming facilities, which are probably the best offered by any Berlin hotel.

Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Haus
Berlin is a city abounding in history. Many houses have a tale to tell, including this place, the former meeting-house of East Berlin's Protestant Church. It was here that the famous "round table discussions" took place a month after the fall of the Wall to decide the future of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Today, the GDR is history and Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Haus a three-star hotel in boomtown Berlin. The house is still run by the church and is regularly used for conferences and meetings. Since being completely restored in 1996, all rooms conform to the standard you would expect of a middle-to-top class hotel. Guests of all faiths and all denominations are welcome.

Crowne Plaza Berlin City Centre
Many of Berlin's best hotels do not appear to be much from the outside and the Crowne Plaza, and with its inconspicuous facade, is no different. Golden Tulip Hotel Park Consul
Before the Wall came down, an internationally renowned hotel chain would have thought more than once about opening a new branch in the heart of Berlin's working-class district of Moabit. Although the location is central, with Zoo Station and the Western city centre just a couple of underground stops away, this was hardly a place to do good hotel business. However, since the German parliament decided that Berlin should once again become the German capital, things have changed for Moabit. Its immediate proximity to the new government quarter is a major point in its favour and the Park Consul, inaugurated in 1991, stands to benefit. The building is modern and functional, with good service a matter of course. Behind the building is a golf range where you can practice your putting and driving.

In the days when the Wall divided the 'gloomy' East from the 'colourful' West, the junction of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimstaler Straße provided a popular motif for picture-postcards. This large four-star hotel is situated in the heart of the Western city, close to the recently rebuilt embassy quarter. Jugendgästehaus Berlin
Jugendgästehaus Berlin, with 354 beds, is Berlin's biggest youth hostel. This was the place where tens of thousands of West German school kids used to stay during their obligatory visit to Berlin. But since the fall of the Wall most organised school visits have ceased. The hostel is now (thankfully) polishing up its image. A new cafeteria has recently opened as has an e-mail service. Situated on historic Gendarmenmarkt, the hotel is in fact a modern construction, although this may go unnoticed when inside, since the decor features classic designs, fine antiques and 19th-century paintings. All in all this is a very classy establishment.

Park Plaza Hotel Berlin
The Park Inn is part of "Forum Landsberger Allee", a commercial and leisure mall opened in 1998 and described by its owners as an "important architectural attraction". The huge modern building with its steel-and-glass facade is certainly a prominent landmark, and the hotel's interior is equally contemporary. There is an S-Bahn station conveniently located behind the building and Prenzlauer Berg's trendy bars and cafés are just a short stroll away.

Jugendgästehaus DSJ
Deutsche Schreberjugend (DSJ) youth hostel is situated in the middle of Kreuzberg. However, this part of Berlin's most infamous district isn't particularly attractive. The area between Moritzplatz, Hallesches Tor and Kochstraße was totally destroyed in World War II. During the 1960's, gloomy high-rise buildings were costructed here to house less affluent members of the community. This isn't the greatest area in Berlin, although many of the city's more interesting spots aren't far away. All facilities are basic because the hostel is oriented to school groups.

TREFF Park Hotel Blub Berlin
Entering the hotel lobby - a winter garden decorated with sparkling fountains and palm trees - you get a rough idea of what the hotel has in store for you. The secret of this hotel is its direct access to the blub (Berlin Air and Bathing Paradise), one of Europe's biggest bathing complexes. Guests have free access to all facilities including swimming pools, saunas, jacuzzis, a giant water slide and "Irish-Roman steam baths". Just relax!

Die Fabrik - Hotel Kreuzberg
The Fabrik was the first backpackers' hostel to open up in Berlin after the fall of the Wall. It now has several imitators, but few have been able to achieve the high standards and popularity that Fabrik enjoys. Situated in an old factory in trendy Kreuzberg, many of the old industrial machines have been incorporated into the hostel, giving it a unique flair. So don't be surprised if you discover a huge cog protruding from the wall of your room! All rooms are simple, clean and spacious. The large lobby contains several leather sofasâ€"perfect for hanging out on. Breakfast is served in the hotel café Eisenwaren.

Hotel Alexander Plaza
Erected a hundred years ago as a factory, this building was restored and turned into a hotel in 1997. The facade is dominated by large rectangular windows which glow in the evening sun; an elegant spire crowns the top. Although old on the outside, no attempt has been made to recreate a historical interior. All the rooms are elegantly simple, with just a few pieces of furniture and carefully chosen colour contrasts. Special attention has been paid to the needs of business guests, who will find specially designed rooms with modern office equipment. For those looking for leisure activities, Hackesche Markt, Berlin's new centre of diversion, is only a stone's throw away.

Berlin Plaza Hotel
This medium-sized establishment in a side-street close to Kurfürstendamm is a typically uninspiring 1950's construction. Once inside though, modern furnishings and a colourful, spacious reception area add a touch of elegance. The main advantage of this hotel is its central location, just a stone's throw away from Kurfürstendamm with its many shops, cinemas and restaurants. The hotel restaurant, the Knese, also offers tasty local specialities.

Grand Hyatt Berlin
The Grand Hyatt on Potsdamer Platz is one of Berlin's newest five-star hotels. Its location could hardly be better, just a short distance away from the Cinemaxx and Imax cinemas, the casino, musical theatre and Arkaden shopping mall. The hotel has a simple facade, yet the interior reveals a high-class and ultra-modern establishment with service to match. The hotel even has an IT expertâ€"a technology conciergeâ€"to help guests with computer problems. Great if you've got a dodgy laptop!

Hotel Mercure Berlin Mitte
In the "new center" of Berlin sits The Mercure hotel. The hotel reflects many of the changes and cultural influence that has come to Berlin in the past decade. From the almost Mediterranean style decour to the French influenced dining area, the Hotel Mercure exhibits a special charm throughout its 120 plus rooms. Though the foreign influence is easily detected, the hotel sits within miles from Berlin's most famous land marks, including the Brandenburg Gate and Potsdam.

Hotel Garni am Scheunenviertel
Each to their own. If you're into cafés, bars and pubs and want to experience Berlin's nightlife and culture at first hand, Hotel am Scheunenviertel is the place for you. But if you prefer the quieter life, maybe you should look elsewhere. Situated on Oranienburger Straße, Berlin's nightlife hotspot, the hotel is really at the thick of things. Yet the area is becoming more and more sophisticated and could also be an option for those looking for more than just a night out on the town. The lovely Hackesche Höfe complex, the synagogue and Friedrichstraße station are within easy walking distance, while Gendarmenmarkt is just a couple of underground stops away.
