This chain is popular with business travellers and tourists taking advantage of its cheap "leisure breaks" (usually weekend rooms at discounted prices). This branch is right in the middle of all the exciting new developments by the harbour - site of the At-Bristol complex and home to two art galleries, cafes and bars - a great, lively, central spot to stay. There are over 200 Travelodges in the UK and Ireland and they all look pretty much the same - clean, comfortable, respectable and slightly bland. If you're looking for character, try elsewhere. It can be a bargain though - you pay per room, not per person, so for a family of four staying in one of its family rooms, it works out as very reasonable.

Avonside Guest House

  • Inexpensive

So-named due to its location, right next to the River Avon, this B&B has been around for as long as anyone can remember (at least 21 years), so it must be doing something right. Small, friendly and full much of the time, it's especially popular with people staying for long periods of time. It's located on a busy main road, 10 minutes by foot from the city centre harbour area (where most of the action and some great attractions are these days), so is very handily-placed. Guests are given keys, so no need to worry about draconian curfews.

It might be a concrete tower block rather than a quaint Georgian terrace, but the city's newest large hotel has a lot going for it. Firstly, it's right in the middle of the city centre, close to all the shops and restaurants; secondly it stands at the end of the M32, making it perfect for those traveling by car or bus (it's also next door to the Bus Station) and lastly, you pay per room, not per person, so for couples or those traveling in a group, it's extremely good value. Apart from all that, the company's claim that it offers "Everything you need for a good night's sleep" is reflected by the facilities inside. Even better, it's also next door to grillbar one of the hottest places to eat in the city right now. What more could you need?

Travelodge - Cribbs Causeway

There are over 200 Travelodges in the UK and Ireland and they all look pretty much the same - clean, comfortable, respectable and slightly bland (if you're looking for character, try elsewhere). They can be a bargain though - you pay per room, not per person, so for a family of four staying in one of its family rooms, it works out as very reasonable. This one is attached to The Lamb and Flag pub/restaurant, almost opposite Bristol's largest shopping centre, known as The Mall at Cribbs Causeway. Westbourne Hotel

Located in Clifton, on a street full of hotels, just off Whiteladies Road (the main street that links the city center and Clifton) means that there are many shops, restaurants and bars all within walking distance. The hotel itself is comfortable, with good-sized rooms and friendly staff - it's on rather a sprawling site however and is composed of one main building and several annexes, so if there is a group of you, make sure you're staying in the same bit.

Marriott Bristol City Centre

A great place to stay if you want to be close to all the action. It's a bit of a concrete jungle in this particular part of town and the building itself is rather unlovely from the outside, but it's a modern and slick hotel and best of all, is right in the city center. So, you're just a couple of minutes walk away from all the shops, attractions and businesses. There is a restaurant based here, The Brasserie, as well as a coffee shop and Terrace Bar. There's also a leisure club which is complimentary to all guests.

Arno's Manor Hotel

  • Moderate

A mile from Bristol city centre (along the A4, Bath Road), this impressive "false gothic" building dates from the 1760s, when it was built by a wealthy Quaker businessman. It still retains a good number of original features that give its comfortable interior a unique atmosphere. The Cloisters Restaurant, for example, is set in a converted chapel - the building was home to The Sisters of the Order of the Good Shepherd, a Roman Catholic convent for many years up until the late 1940s. Don't worry - it's rather less austere these days and is very comfortable and cosy.
