Cataract Pyramids Resort
Far from the pollution of Cairo, this new resort complex is laid out around the shimmering waters of its free-form pool - one of the largest in Egypt. Pyramids can be found on either side (both at Giza and Saqqara) but the rest of Cairo's attractions are a distant drive. Not that the hotel gives guests a reason to want to leave - their every need is catered for and the poolside is too relaxing. The rooms are spacious and come with private balconies, but like much of the resort, they can appear a little glitzy and over the top.

The entrance may look like part of Cairo's centuries-old bazaar, but this hotel in the heart of Khan el-Khalili dates back just a few decades.
