Atlas Zamalek Hotel
Not in Zamalek as the name would imply, this comfortable hotel is located across the Nile on a busy road in the upscale district of Mohandiseen. Its rooms are spacious and clean, with all basic amenities. While this large sandy coloured building overlooks one of the city's best shopping areas, crossing the freeway to get there can be a terrifying experience. Fortunately, there is no shortage of great shopping and restaurant options on the same side as the hotel.

Sofitel Cairo Maadi Towers
Towering over the Nile in one of Cairo's greenest suburbs, this hotel may not look like much from the outside. Inside, however, it becomes clear why it is ranked as one of the city's best five-star values. Its spacious rooms are beautifully furnished with fine dark wood furniture and rich fabrics. Staff are friendly and go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one. While the location may seem a little far, it is close to Coptic Cairo and the pyramids of Giza and Saqqara.

Cataract Pyramids Resort
Far from the pollution of Cairo, this new resort complex is laid out around the shimmering waters of its free-form pool - one of the largest in Egypt. Pyramids can be found on either side (both at Giza and Saqqara) but the rest of Cairo's attractions are a distant drive. Not that the hotel gives guests a reason to want to leave - their every need is catered for and the poolside is too relaxing. The rooms are spacious and come with private balconies, but like much of the resort, they can appear a little glitzy and over the top.

Hormoheb Hotel
Located on the main road to the Pyramids amid a string of nightclubs, this hotel is not much to look at from the outside, but comfortable inside. The rooms are simple yet clean, but have no views. Hussein Hotel (El)
The entrance may look like part of Cairo's centuries-old bazaar, but this hotel in the heart of Khan el-Khalili dates back just a few decades. The foyer is impressively decorated in dark woodwork with Islamic motifs, but the rooms are rather plain and a little rough around the edges. They do however, offer fantastic peeks at the busy alleyways below, which recreate scenes from Arabian Nights. Definitely worth considering if you want to feel the pulse of Islamic Cairo and don't mind the constant noise.

Carlton Hotel
Recently renovated, this art deco hotel with dark hardwood furniture still retains much of its charm. The rooms are basic but clean, and many have nice views of the busy streets below. The rooms facing the alley are quieter. This is a good budget option for those wanting to be right in the center of the action as the lively neighborhood it's in never sleeps. Definitely worth checking out is the all-night vegetable market around the corner.

Siag Pyramids Hotel
A huge chandelier and brass spiral staircase push the glitzy gold lobby to the brink of camp, but the Pyramid views from every room make this a forgiveable excess. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the health club offers a Finnish sauna and Swedish massage for muscles weary from horseriding in the desert. The services are five-star, but the prices are not, making this hotel exceptional value for money.

Capsis Palace Hotel
Just down the road from Cairo's main railway station, this hotel offers half decent lodging for travelers in a pinch. The street outside is extremely noisy and the rooms are small, but overall it is a good value for its budget price. Come prepared, as no alcohol is served on the premises.
