St. Mark's Lutheran Hospice
This 19th century building, owned by the Lutheran Church contains a secret world of wonders. There is a classy lobby and gardens with a pond, palm trees, foliage rustling in the breeze and views of the Dome of the Rock and Church of the Redeemer. The peace is all-encompassing; it is hard to believe that the busy souk is a few hundred metres away. It offers both guest-house and hostel accommodation. The hostel area is spotlessly clean and full of character, with the dorms in a vaulted cellar from the Crusader period.

Despite its name, this is surprisingly not a theme hotel! Close to the Old City, this simple little hotel has large, newly furnished rooms all with a pleasant view towards the quaint villages of East Jerusalem. Although this is known as a business and commerce hotel, there are no specific facilities as such (although a conference room is on the way). The rooms here are very large but some of the amenities are dated and worn. All the standard features are available including a spacious bathroom and carpeted rooms. The television only receives two channels; but really, who needs to watch television when the historic Old City is right outside your doorstep. At night after a long day of sightseeing, the hotel bar is a nice place to unwind and escape the crowds.

Beit Shmuel
Despite appearances, this is a youth hostel. The airy lobby has rose marble tiles, businessmen hold meetings in the lobby café and there is a landscaped courtyard with palm trees and a minimalist Japanese feel. The building doubles as the Culture and Education Centre of the World Union of Progressive Judaism, which means there are frequently concerts and tours that guests can participate in. The simply furnished rooms have stow-away bunk beds (the top bunk looks like a panel in the wall, but can be unfolded to change the sleeping capacity in the room from three to six).

The brainchild of an American immigrant, Rabbi Meir Schuster, this is a home away from home for Jewish travellers who wish to connect with their heritage.
