Hotel California
Given its location in Ame-mura (American Village), its name might have come from the Eagles song! And given the popularity of Ame-mura, guests at this hotel are getting quite a deal when you match the price and the location. The hotel is easily confused with a inexpensive motel because of its neon sign and less-than formal decor. And why would that not be? The rooms are comfortable and come with standard amenities, while the hotel itself has a bar and restaurant.

Hotel Kitahachi
An 'inn' would be a more appropriate description for Kita-hachi. It is a small place with just 38 rooms and operates its own late-night shot bar open until 4a. The surrounding area offers similar opportunities for inebriation. When its time to crash into bed, you will find the rooms sufficiently pleasant. They are not huge but neither are they cramped, and the amenities are ample. The rooms also have Internet jacks for those with personal computers.

New Osaka Hotel
The Shin-Osaka area to the north of Osaka is a region that has developed dramatically in recent years. There are a number of hotels in the area, and this is one of the nicer ones in terms of facilities. There are conference and banquet rooms, a wedding hall, three restaurants, a lounge and a bar, as well as non-smoking rooms and special rooms for female guests. Unfortunately, the rooms are rather small, which makes the prices only marginally attractive.

There is nothing particularly noteworthy about the rates for this hotel, until you start adding in the discounts, that is. Hotel members receive a 30% discount, while all rooms are discounted 20% on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These considerations make the hotel a little more attractive given that the rooms are not particularly spacious and only minimally stocked with amenities. The location, too, about 10 minutes on foot from Osaka station is not bad, but neither could you call it very convenient.

The exterior and the interiors are not very impressive, but are functional and comfortable. You can dine at the Garden Cafe or the Garden Kitchen, when you don't feel like heading out. Hotel Il Grande Umeda
Because the fairly spacious rooms have mostly single beds, this large business hotel built in 1985 tends to be frequented by solo travelers. Otherwise, the hotel is fairly ordinary, with no other notable features. Its location about a couple of minutes on foot from Temma Station may be a plus for some.

Hotel Osaka Bay Tower
Perhaps no other hotel in Osaka provides a better view of the city than this one with its 51 floors. Neither do many hotels offer better facilities. The rooms are quite spacious and come with full amenities, as you would expect of a first-rate hotel. The hotel itself is also attached to a gym with a pool and spa. Visitors considering this hotel should ask about special room plans. Either way, though, the prices seem quite reasonable for a hotel of this stature.

Hotel Landmark Umeda
The big draw of this hotel in the busy area just north of Osaka Station is its late check-out time on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: 1p. Given the evening entertainment selections around the hotel, most will need the extra time. Although the surroundings are noisy, this solid, concrete hotel built in the late 1990s offers some insulation against the noise. The rooms are very basic, not too terribly small but certainly not large and equipped with standard amenities.

This hotel is famous, though more because of the four interesting statuesque columns at its entrance. This aside, the hotel offers comfortable rooms in a somewhat lively area of town. Okutsuso
Okutsuso is a deluxe ryokan (Japanese inn) on the banks of the Yoshii River. Okutsu Onsen is known as a bijin-ni-naru yu, a beautifying spring. Bathing in the water is said to give women (and men!) milky white complexions and rosy cheeks. Okutsuso is a traditional old ryokan that offers elegant guestrooms with light pine paneling, sliding shoji screens, tatami mat flooring, TV, refrigerator, western toilet and full bath. The indoor baths are in fragrant hinoki tubs. Outside, large, landscaped baths sit next to the river. The fare combines fresh mountain vegetables and river fish.

Kameya Ryokan
This small, inexpensive family-run Japanese-style inn in southern Osaka is conveniently located near the waterfront and Universal Studios. Some rooms have private bathrooms, but for those who want to go local, there is a Japanese-style communal bath on the premises. Anyone staying here will leave Osaka with fond memories of the warm, friendly hospitality. One thing to consider, though, is that the doors are locked at midnight, so you must be in before then.

Maruichi Hotel
This hotel is generally speaking an affordable pick, but the doubles and triples are particularly attractive in price. Also, while the hotel is relatively old for Japan, having been built in 1969, the rooms are rather spacious, especially the singles. The singles also come with huge desks for work. Park Hotel Rinkai
This hotel, which backs up to the peaceful Utsubo Park, would normally be considered inexpensive, except that the singles and twins are very small - just big enough for the bed - and come with minimal amenities. The Japanese-style rooms, however, are more than twice as large, though a little expensive. But given the location and the hotel's other facilities, the prices do indeed seem reasonable.

Capsule Hotel Asahiplaza Shinsaibashi
The main attraction of this mid-sized business hotel, built in 1985, is its price in relationship to its location near Shinsaibashi; a center of much activity in the Osaka area. Although the rooms are hardly spacious, they do come with standard amenities and are also available for day-use. A special room plan is also available that includes a buffet breakfast. The restaurant provides good course meals, though there is plenty else to choose from in the surrounding area.

The restaurant facilities are nothing extraordinary, though the dining facilities often include a nice morning buffet.
