Villa Zurich is not far from the heart of the city's business district in suburban Cihangir, and just five minutes walk from Taksim Square - the entertainment and shopping district. The rooms are light and airy (although a little small) and there is also a sunny roof terrace offering views of the Bosphorus. If you make your reservation on the internet, you can get a special discount on room rates. There is a rooftop restaurant that serves an unusual combination of traditional Turkish and Japanese cuisine.

Bosphorus Palace Hotel

Located in a Bosphorus mansion resembling a wedding cake, the BP is the city's most exclusive get-away. Similar in appearance to an English stately home, this gorgeous mini palace fronts one of the world's busiest waterways. The rooms are decorated with gilt furniture and heavy velvet drapes. To relax, why not slip into the jacuzzi and soak up the view of ships gliding beneath the awesome Atatürk Suspension Bridge. The high-class Italian restaurant, Cicconi's, is worth a visit -- even if you can't afford a room.

Armada

The Armada doesn't score many points for its seedy location, even though it is only a ten-minute walk up the hill to historical Sultanahmet where all the sights are. Despite this, most of the rooms have fabulous Bosphorus views. The 120-room Armada is well designed and manages to avoid stereotypical four-star blandness. An attractive lobby area with a little pond and café make guests feel at home, and the rooms, although they're not exceptional, are very comfortable. If you can't stretch your budget to luxurious five star accommodations, then this is definitely one of the best options south of the Bosphorus.

Kybele Hotel

Designed by former circus owners, one of the many eccentric features of the Kybele is the 1000-plus vintage glass lamps hanging from the ceilings. Each of the 16 smallish bedrooms, brimming with colorful kilims, antique candlestands, colorful old bottles and various other trinkets, are very comfortable and are fitted with elegant marble en suite bathrooms. Pink and green walls complement the whole garish effect. Every morning, breakfast is served in a colorful courtyard.

Çınar Hotel

The Çınar opened its doors in 1958. It is located right on the coast in Yeşilköy, and offers guests a private beach and pier to sunbathe on. The main selling point here is the splendid view of the Sea of Marmara from all of the rooms. Famed for its warm hospitality and spacious rooms, this modern, five-star luxury hotel is very close to the airport but a long way (20 km) from the business district and the city's historical monuments.

Hotel Grand Liza

Elegant atmosphere and affordable rates, is what the Grand Liza Hotel has to offer. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped, ensuring the best in luxury and comfort. One of the advantages of this low budget hotel is that it's on the south side (the preferred side) of squalid Tarlabasi Bulvari. The Yonca is one of the better dos houses compared to the many small, unkempt, shabby-looking dumps to be found in this seedy bar-filled district of narrow cobbled back streets, not far from Istiklal Caddesi. The rooms are not particularly fancy but are usually reasonably clean and comfortable enough. You can't really ask for more at this price!

Eysan Hotel

This is a conspicuous yellow hotel on the picturesque Asian shore near the ferry landing points on Kadiköy's bustling waterfront. Bosphorus views are available from all rooms, which are spacious, simple and very comfortable. The family who manage the place are friendly and helpful but only speak a smattering of very basic English. If you need to be in Kadiköy, this hotel is perfect as it is centrally located and just a short walk from hundreds of lively restaurants, cafés, bars and amenities.

Hotel Sari Konak

Alp Guesthouse

The words "a little strange" would suffice to describe this mock-Alpine timber-framed house which doesn't even make a pretence of disguising its bare concrete surfaces - aside from hanging a few colourful kilims (traditional Turkish flat-woven rugs) around the place to soften the effect. Plenty of photographs and letters from happy customers adorn the otherwise sparse walls. All of the bedrooms contain the basic necessities and those on the top floor have magnificent sea views, but do cost more. The basement rooms aren't recommended, especially in winter, as the boilers are noisy and too hot. See their website for further details.

The shopping zone of Akmerkez is also just a short drive away.

Merit Antique

The Merit Antique was restored in 1986 so that it now has a light, spacious atrium linking its four original buildings. Within these buildings, several restaurants (as well as the only real kosher restaurant in town) share a space with a large aviary of endlessly chattering birds and a fancy water fountain. The decor is rather ostentatious but the rooms are very comfortable. The ceaseless traffic on Ordu Caddesi can be avoided by choosing a back room rather than one overlooking the busy, noisy street.

Pierre Loti Hotel

Named after the famous French novelist, the elegant Pierre Loti Hotel is a short walk from the Blue Mosque, Haghia Sophia and all of the other historical monuments nearby. Nearby you'll find the bustling Covered Bazaar with its endless lanes and alleys filled with shops selling all manner of Turkish treasures and the historical Cemberlitas Hamam is not far down the street. The Pierre Loti Hotel is a three-star hotel with very comfortable facilities and near to public transport.

Hotel Arcadia

A tiny stone garden is the quaint setting for breakfast, and a nightcap can be enjoyed on the rooftop bar with an uninterrupted view of the Bosphorus. Reservations are a must.

InterContinental Ceylan Istanbul

Versace china in the lobby's tea room along with Iznik tile fountains, black Italian marble bathrooms, intricate inlay on all the woodwork, and a massive winding lobby staircase with cracked-glass steps. Rooms tend to be on the small side, but the luxury makes up for it, not to mention the standard voice mail and data jack in each room. Absolutely the best gym in the city, with 20-foot skylight domes, televisions to keep you entertained, and sleek Turkish baths. The hotel has restaurants on its top floor, along with City Lights Bar, which boasts some of the best waterfront views in town. Safran offers Turkish cuisine in an elegant atmosphere with softly-played live Ottoman music. There is the Citronelle restaurant with French/Oriental cuisine and the Californian Brasserie on the main floor above the lobby. Similar in price to the other 5-star hotels, but a better buy.

Hotel YeniÅŸehir Palas

This is a centrally located hotel -- just a short walk from İstiklal Caddesi and all that ebullient Beyoğlu has to offer. The building itself is rather ugly but once inside, it is comfortable and pleasant. A bar greets guests in the foyer. Unfortunately, the rooms are bordering on basic, a little on the small side, and the Mecure Hotel opposite blocks any views that might have been. However, the tasteful décor and friendly staff will make you glad you came. The Vareli Wine Bar and Junction Pub on either side of the hotel cater to both guests and locals.

Kariye Hotel

Renovated by the Turkish Touring & Automobile Association, the Kariye Hotel, built in the 19th century, was once an Ottoman residence. After having been stripped down to its framework, it was renovated and transformed into one of Istanbul's finest small hotels. The Asithane downstairs serves up fine Ottoman cuisine. The hotel is situated right next door to the Church of St. Saviour in Chora -- one of Istanbul's must-see sights. Unfortunately, the location is a little out of the way -- a good half-hour bus ride from the main attractions in Sultanahmet.

Avicenna Hotel

This hotel was once an Ottoman-style home, and dates back to the 19th century. It has 49 rooms, some with balconies, a terrace cafe overlooking the sea, and a garden restaurant. If you are looking for a comfortable stay in Istanbul, head to the Avicenna Hotel.

Radisson Hotel

• Very Expensive/Deluxe

This is a five-star international chain hotel, conveniently located near the international airport -- if that's where you want to be. The only drawback is that it's a long, hard 20km haul through traffic to the city center and all the tourist attractions. However, it is an excellent hotel for business meetings and international conferences and perfect for that last night in town before an early morning flight. It offers modern, comfortable rooms and all the facilities you would expect from a deluxe hotel.

Best Western Citadel Hotel

The most noticeable thing about this isolated hotel (situated on the coast of the Sea of Marmara) is that it is pink. Very pink. The hotel is actually a renovated three-storey mansion, done out in garish colours with excellent sea views. It helps if you can ignore the six lanes of dire traffic right out front! One of the hotel's plus points is its proximity to the popular (but pricey) fish restaurants of Kumkapı. The lovely conservatory bar is a pleasant place to have a drink and there are also three decent restaurants serving a varied range of dishes.

Cordial House

Centrally located in Sultanahmet, Cordial House is halfway between the Blue Mosque and the Grand Bazaar. It's an economy hotel catering to budget travelers and has rapidly gained a reputation as one of the best of its kind in the city. It's just a few minutes' walk from Hagia Sophia, the Underground Cistern, Topkapi Place and all the city's main historical attractions. Cordial House is also close to tram and bus, train and airport shuttle stops. The friendly, helpful, English-speaking staff are on hand 24/7 to assist guests.

Grace Hotel

Just a short walk from Istklal Caddesi, right in the heart of bustling Beyoglu, the Grace is located in a beautifully restored late Ottoman building which was renovated and transformed into a hotel. The charming rooms are spacious and comfortable, and many offer views of the Golden Horn. It is only few minutes walk from the hectic fish market, the main shopping district and an endless array of restaurants and cafés as well as a stone's throw from the hub of the city's energetic nightlife. Side Hotel & Pension

The Side Hotel & Pension is popular with backpackers and low-budget travellers, mostly due to its extremely friendly, helpful management and well-kept rooms. The hotel itself is clean and tidy with en suite bathrooms in each room, boasting very modern plumbing -- unlike many of its counterparts. The pension side is a little more basic, offering shared bathrooms. Each room is fairly different, so it's wise to inspect a few of them before you choose. Breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace and free tea is served in the reception area where there is also a tiny book exchange for guests.

Hotel Celal Sultan

Until recently, the Celal Sultan was simply an ancient Ottoman-style wooden townhouse but it has now been tastefully renovated to service the tourist district as a hotel. The rooms are a decent size and extremely comfortable, decorated with lovely yellow plaids and peaches and cream pastels. Some of the upper-floor rooms also have balconies with fabulous views of the nearby Hagia Sophia. There's also an open-air terrace on the roof with ornate wrought-iron chairs and tables, from where guests can enjoy excellent views over Sultanahmet.

Bentley Hotel (The)

The mustard yellow rooms are elegant and decked out with lovely walnut furniture and gorgeous traditional bedspreads. The proprietors, twins Esra and Hamra, work hard to maintain high standards. There's no hotel restaurant, but the Rumeli Café bistro -- run by the same people -- is just across the road.

Renaissance Polat Istanbul Hotel

The best of the airport hotels, the Polat Renaissance is just a five-minute taxi ride from the international airport. Located as it is, way out of town in the coastal suburb of Yeşilköy, it's a long trek to Istanbul's sightseeing and business amenities. The building itself is a tall, shiny blue-glass monument, perfectly placed beside the sea. A central atrium presides over the ultra-modern and very stylish reception area. All the rooms have superb panoramic views of the Sea of Marmara.

Sarnic Hotel

Stay in a charming restored Ottoman residence tucked away on a quiet backstreet of the historic quarter. A small boutique hotel, decked out sparingly in period décor, its rooms are large and comfortable with modern bathroom fittings. The gorgeous reception hall resembles an Ottoman living room with cushion-lined wooden benches, low tables and intricately woven carpets. Berk Guesthouse

Located in a quiet street right by the grandiose Four Seasons Hotel, this family-run guesthouse was originally a house owned by Grandma Yesim. It was demolished and a hotelâ€"now run by her grandchildrenâ€"replaced the original structure in the mid-1980s. It's a little expensive for such basic facilities and the extra charge of $45 for so-called "deluxe" rooms is highway robbery, but there are plenty of people who appreciate the family atmosphere and many regulars who check in every year. Breakfast is served in a quaint walled garden, and there is a roof terrace and lounge area as well.

Erguvan Hotel Istanbul

The Hilton was the first high-rise block built to accommodate visitors to Istanbul. Although it provides its guests with beautiful, sweeping panoramic views of the Bosphorus, it's a bit of an eyesore to look at from the outside. Considering the prices, the rooms are not exceptional. The décor however, is pleasant and the hotel provides a vast range of facilities for families and businesspeople. For sporty types, there is a kilometer-long running track winding through the lush 13 acres of gardens. Not all of the rooms have Bosphorus views and they are therefore priced accordingly. One of the hotel's claims to fame is that Ian Fleming stayed here in 1955 when he was working on From Russia With Love.

Dersaadet Hotel

This magnificent hotel is located in the Old City Center. It is a staid wooden building from the outside, but once in, the lively atmosphere charms you and you can't wait to start your stay. Orient Express Hotel

A glorious panorama of the Golden Horn replaces the typical mosque and minaret views found at other hotels throughout the city. A pleasant room here in the Sirkeci district costs around two-thirds of the price of those in downtown Sultanahmet. While the rooms are a little on the small side and have none of the classic Ottoman trimmings, they're all quite comfortable with excellent amenities. The hotel is a short walk to public transport links, tourist sites, restaurants, shops and nightclubs.

Hotel Ararat

There are lots of facilities for active children, including a pool and games room and a TV room. Families are very welcome. The rooms offer views of the busy port and the Bosphorus and are decorated in unassuming pastels and bright floral prints.

Antik Hotel

Named for the late Roman/early Byzantine cistern in the basement, this four-star hotel is situated in the Old City, just a five-minute walk from the covered bazaar, a ten-minute walk from the Blue Mosque and fifteen minutes from Topkapi Palace. If you stay three nights, one dinner is on the house. Alternatively, stay one week and get one extra night's accommodation for free.

Turkoman Hotel

Situated by the Hippodrome, almost directly opposite the ancient Egyptian obelisk, the Hotel Turkoman's rooftop terrace offers its guests one of the best views of the Blue Mosque in town -- after all, it's right across the street! The Avlonya Hotel is a simple two-star hotel, open all year round, which caters mainly to business people passing through the mad metropolis. The hotel offers very basic, clean rooms (although perhaps a little overpriced) and the management are both helpful and friendly.

Sultan Tourist Hostel

This hostel caters to the backpacking fraternity, athough some consider it only second best in terms of atmosphere compared to the Orient. There are single and double rooms as well as mixed-sex dormitories. The whole place has recently been redecorated and the rooms are bright and airy. One of the major drawbacks is that there is only one shower/toilet facility per floor, and therefore not a lot of privacy. There's a restaurant on the top floor and also a computer room with games and videos.
