This is a traditional Japanese inn situated in the hot spring village of Yumura. The water comes from a very powerful hot spring situated in the center of the town. The hot spring gushes out 490 liters of very hot water every minute of the day. There are separate bathing facilities for men and women, and hot water never runs short. Indoor baths are traditional wooden tubs and outside are two boulder-strewn open-air pools. The water is simple thermal and is used to treat arthritis, rheumatism, aching limbs, and the general relief of stress and nervousness.

Shimogoten Ryokan
This traditional Japanese inn sits on the banks of the Hidaka River in the hot spring resort of Ryujin. The resort became popular in the 17th century, and Shimogoten was an inn designed to for the followers of the feudal lords but it was reconstructed and modernized in the 1960's. Yunoya Ryokan
The Nikko Yumote Hot Spring has more than a 1,200 year-old history. It was blessed by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi, famous for discovering and blessing hot springs. Ichinoyu

The Nikko Kanaya Hotel, established in 1873 (Meiji era), is the oldest continuously operating resort hotel in Japan. Taniguchi

Imadakan is a splendid old Japanese inn with a full hinoki, or Japanese cypress, bath. The experience of bathing in steamy waters in a hinoki tub surrounded by the beautiful timber and inhaling its rich fragrance is tremendously pleasurable. The only incentive you may have to leave this hinoki heaven is to go outside and experience the river bath in the Gamata River. The rock lined pool corrals the hot spring sulfur water bubbling from the riverbed protecting bathers from the currents. The rooms in Imadakan are wonderfully old and most have open-hearth fireplaces with suspended iron cooking pots.
