Mailberger Hof
This is a charming and historic hotel, not far from the Viennese State Opera and the Ronacher Theater. Converted from a 14th century medieval house it continues to be a historical site and regulated by rules of preservation. Nearly all rooms overlook the beautiful courtyard, are tastefully furnished and very spacious. Some rooms offer kitchenettes and are reserved upon request. In the summer, guests can sit under large white parasols in the courtyard and enjoy the excellent Viennese food served at the hotel restaurant.

Quisisana
This is a wonderful late nineteenth-century pension, run by a friendly old couple since 1969. It is just a short walk from the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) and the Volkstheater. The rooms are small, but kept spotlessly clean and vary from each other due to the differences in structure. Choices of accommodations include singles and doubles, with or without bathrooms. Prices are lower without en suite facilities. Guests receive a continental breakfast in the charming, wood-paneled, ground floor café and bar.

Pertschy Pensionen
This pension is an endearing combination of rather dowdy decor, and a nice 300-year-old building in a quiet side street between Graben and Hofburg. The bedrooms have all been renovated with rococo-style furniture and feature crystal chandeliers. The clip-clop of the Fiacre horses, which pass the hotel daily on their way to the Hofburg, adds to the special atmosphere. Guests can reach the Michaelakirche, the traditional Griensteidl Coffeehouse and the National Library from here in a matter of minutes.

Vienna Marriott
This modern hotel, located opposite Vienna's Stadtpark, is part of the Marriott chain and has all the features you'd expect to find in this category of accommodation: a restaurant, bar, shopping-arcade, parking facilities, and even a swimming-pool. The rooms are tasteful and unpretentiously decorated, but despite sound-proofing, those looking onto the Stadtpark can be rather noisy as they face the Ringstrasse. The Gartenbaukino and the Museum of Applied Arts are just a stone's throw from this hotel.

Nossek
Nossek is a very popular, small pension on the Graben— one of Vienna's most elegant shopping street. Guests are advised to book well in advance (months even) especially for a room with a balcony overlooking the Graben. The decor in the breakfast room as well as the bedrooms is simple but very elegant, with rug-covered parquet floors, chandeliers, period furniture and tasteful paintings. Only the bathroom facilities are rather rudimentary, but that does not spoil the charm and flair of this hotel.

Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth
This town house lies in a side street, just yards from St. Stephan's Cathedral. It dates back to the 14th century and in the 1800s hosted many famous musicians, such as Wagner and Liszt. Persian rugs lie on parquet floors in the elegant public rooms. The fin-de-siècle bedrooms are also smartly decorated and well kept. Should you fancy a stroll around the shops in the daytime, the nearby pedestrian zone is ideal and offers ample opportunity for enjoying one's favorite tipple once night falls.

This is a welcoming guesthouse, run for 80 years by the same family. It is in a beautiful palatial building with a garden in the 17th district. Pension Ani Falstaff
Pension Falstaff rents comfortable accommodation; the rooms are rather plain with just a telephone, but the hotel has a few redeeming features: a breakfast room, central heating, showers and a television on each floor. Considering the price paid, it is more than adequate. Just around the corner, there is only of Vienna's few French restaurants and the university. However, given the location just off the Ringstrasse (and therefore only a quarter of an hour by foot to the city center), this is one of the really good inexpensive places in Vienna!

Mercure Josefshof Wien
The marble and glass entrance hall is a bit misleading, and yet, this is a good choice. The breakfast room, opening onto a garden courtyard, is pleasant and the bedrooms have high-quality antique imitation furniture and parquet flooring. Long term guests can book one of the small apartments, which come complete with a kitchenette. The location, just behind the parliament and the Ringstrasse, is great because all the important sights in the first district are within walking distance. However, watch the prices: from April to October they tend to be much higher than the ones mentioned here!

It has been designed using striking, modern furniture—black leather, ethnic rugs and abstract prints—giving it a unique, modern atmosphere. Some of the rooms have balconies and others just have great city views. Within its walls is a charming Bistro and bar enjoyed by guests and locals. Altstadt Vienna
First opened in 1991, the Altstadt Hotel proved itself a hit rather swiftly. Centrally set in a beautiful patrician house just west of the Museumsquartier and very close to Mariahilferstrasse, it has great decor with a mixture of new designer lighting and bold colored walls, as well as some nice old-fashioned features. The rooms are very spacious, have polished parquet floors and high ceilings, and a handful overlook a peaceful courtyard. The breakfast buffet is superb and the service excellent.

Hotel Pension Museum
This classic Viennese pension, dating from the turn of the century, is situated above the Bellaria cinema. The Bellaria shows old black-and-white films to a usually rather droll audience—most of them pensioners. The hotel's rooms are massive, with high ceilings and parquet floors, but are rather sparingly furnished. The sitting and breakfast rooms have furry chairs and, of course, chandeliers. A plus for families is that it is right opposite the Museum of Art History and the Museum of Natural History and their extensive collections.

Amadeus
It was in fact Brahms and Schubert, rather than Mozart, who used to frequent the tavern that once stood on the site of this hotel. The décor of this spruce and modern hotel matches Mozart's era; red carpets, upholstery and lampshades as well as opulent chandeliers create a very rococo flair, which strikingly contrasts with the modern service and management; both are products of a firm philosophy of personalized service and the importance of well-kept surroundings.

Pension Suzanne
Hidden behind an ugly block of flats and situated above a flower shop and a adult-style shop, this is not the sort of place you stumble across. However, it is very worthwhile to seek it out and its location is great (just steps from Kärtnerstrasse and the Opera house) and the rooms with their comfy armchairs and pretty paintings have a tempered charm reminiscent of the Vienna of times gone by. The more expensive ones even have a kitchenette. The same owners have run it for two generations now, and consequently, guests are in safe hands!

König von Ungarn
This beautiful hotel, located centrally on a side street of Kärtnerstrasse, has a refined atmosphere and offers surprisingly palatable prices. Framed signatures of famous people from past centuries cover the walls, and Mozart is said to have composed "The Marriage of Figaro" in a part of the building now called the Figarohaus. The covered courtyard houses a very elegant bar and the rooms are just as smart. The hotel's restaurant is recommended for its fine-quality Viennese food.

Pension Auer
This hotel is not located at the prettiest of locations, but pleasant enough inside and a real bargain. Its location is very convenient though, close to the Josefstadt and its bars and restaurants and with good public transport connections. The rooms are plain and practical; not all have en suite toilets, but they do have showers. A cheap and cheerful place to stay!

Hotel Sacher Wien
Sacher, one of Vienna's most famous hotels, has been popular with the rich and famous ever since it opened in 1876. These days its cafe is full of tourists, thanks to the famous Sacher chocolate cake. However, the hotel itself has still managed to maintain an exclusive flair, with its oil paintings, marble stucco, red velvet curtains in the lounges and exclusive spa. The more expensive rooms are stunning, while the standard rooms are a bit simpler but just as comfortable. A fine combination of luxury and tradition will provide for a wonderful stay while in Vienna.

Even though the Vienna Hilton building is of a modern style, the atmosphere is very pleasant and charming; it offers all the facilities you would expect to find: shops, a bar, good restaurants, a café and a business center. The view from the upper floors is a must for visitors to Vienna; the higher you go, the better the views and the plusher and pricier the bedrooms become! Carlton Opera Hotel
The Carlton Opera Hotel is in a well-preserved art nouveau building, not far from the big outdoor market and Saturday flea market, the so-called Naschmarkt. The Viennese, art nouveau style can even be seen by the door: the elevator sports a wooden frame and the lobby has original beveled glass. The rooms display not only style, but character and have been customized using matching fabrics and coordinating colors. All of the hotel's rooms come with shower or bath and toilet. It is closed in January.

Hotel Zipser
This pension in the Josefstadt may not have as much character as some of the other places in Vienna, but the art nouveau hotel does have a friendly approach, a very central location and smart rooms. Ask for one of the larger bedrooms to the rear of the hotel; they have great, spacious bathrooms and big wooden balconies overlooking a leafy courtyard. This is also the more peaceful side of the building. The management often go about booking tours around the city, theater tickets and concert places upon request for hotel guests.

Art Hotel Vienna
Art Hotel Vienna is a chic designer hotel in the Fifth District, combining the worlds of art, culture and traditional Vienna. Color, form and design are merged to produce an air of contemporary innovation and practicality. In contrast to many of the lodgings you will find in Vienna, this hotel favors modern, stylish furniture with a heavy emphasis on design, and modern art hanging on its walls. The only downside of staying here is that it is not all that central. It is, however, close to Margaretengürtel underground station, from where it is only a ten-minute ride to Karlsplatz. All rooms are en suite.
